On-line advertising doesn’t work. It’s a phrase I hear over and over again. And it’s not wholly inaccurate. The fact is most online advertising doesn’t work. But there are reasons.
Dishonesty – In a desperate attempt to keep advertisers, some website managers outright lie about their hit count. Essentially they end up over-charging their clients and leave them thinking that hundreds of thousands of impressions are needed to obtain a single sale.
We can’t lie! It’s not that we’re above it, it’s that our site’s traffic is monitored by FOUR different independent agencies, and those reports are passed right on to our advertisers.
Duplicating – A slightly less dishonest tactic is a refresh timer, where every 30 seconds or so the page is refreshed to the anchor point the visitor is at. This makes it appear as if a single visitor that stays on a page for 3 minutes, actually visited 6 times.
Sliders – One of the worst still is the slider sites. Everyone’s been on them, top 50 scariest movies of all time, or celebrities then and now, etc. You’ll notice they’ll have a sentence or two of content surrounded by a dozen or so ads – that nobody looks at. And by the time you finish the gallery, you’re fifty pages deep into their site and have “viewed” 500 ads, or in most cases, one ad 500 times.
Clearance – Even though professional ad agencies come in all sizes and none of them charge advertisers for placement (they get a special rate and the difference makes up their profits) companies are still using clearance sites like Ad Sense or Ad Choice. The problem with that is, not only are the slider sites I mentioned above built specifically for them, but their algorithms generally suck. 90% of the time you’re advertising to people who have either recently visited your site or already made the purchase from your competitor. If you don’t believe me, browse the internet for a while and pay attention to the ads that follow you. The example picture above was shortly after I subscribed to the advertisers only product at $5mo
Often Ignored – Ad placement and design on websites have become so standard that we hardly even see them anymore. Be honest, when was the last time you looked at the ad column on Facebook? It’s the column between your newsfeed and your active friends list.
I guarantee one of the very first things you notice on our site is our advertisers. Why? Our ads are well designed, placed close to content, constantly moving and relevant to our site’s visitors.
So why even bother advertising online?
The short answer is because that’s where your prospective customers are. That’s where you can target the exact demographic you’re after. And because if you advertise smart, not only can you see immediate results, but you can achieve a high equity position in your market, so yours in the company people think of when they need that particular service.
